Costs of online degrees depend on many factors
1. Location and education providerSometimes, tuition fees for a distance programme are more affordable than for an on-campus degree, due to the fact that operating expenses for the university offering distance degree courses are not as high as for traditional classes.
However, depending on each country and university, tuitions are evaluated differently. You shouldn’t be surprised if some universities or colleges have the same tuitions for online study degrees as well as for on-campus Bachelor, Master or PhD degree.
2. Additional fees
Some fees included in online degrees are optional. Most online degree programmes charge a technology fee. In the U.S., it can range from 40 USD for each session when students enrol to around 120 USD.
3. Subjects studied
Just like for a normal study degree, tuition fees for an online course are different depending on the field you want to study. So, an online humanities degree will always have lower tuition fees compared to an online computer science course for instance. Some students apply to a distance learning programme out of financial reasons only. For example, students who initially wanted to enrol in an on-campus business administration or a project management degree but didn’t afford the tuition and thought an online degree in the same field would eventually be considerably cheaper. Although logically, they should be more affordable, sometimes you realise that this is not the case or the difference in terms of tuition is minimal.
Estimates of online degree tuition fees
Making a rough estimate on tuition fees for a distance learning degree could be very tricky. Examples of online degrees:
- 7,000 GBP in a UK university – for a degree in logistics management
- 6,000 EUR – a Master in tourism at a university from Portugal
- 16,000 EUR Master programme in agriculture at a Dutch university
- from 1,000 to 4,000 EUR – a complete degree at a German university
- between 6,000 and 9,000 EUR – a complete degree at a Spanish university
